Heavenly north by north

No doubt you’ll reckon the first 30 seconds from The Hollowmen. It wasn’t until listening to it twice that my internal memory drive kicked in that I actually recall hearing North by North on community FM back in the 80’s. Which goes to show if you cram your head with too much shit, the good stuff gets buried and partially forgotten.

Love one of the comments left on YouTube:

Been dating this tune intensely enough to marry it.

After 18 years I tend to agree. Now to track down some Flying Nun compilations.

I sense something, a presence I’ve not felt since…

Governor Tarkin: You don’t know how hard I found it, signing the order to terminate your life.

Princess Leia: I’m surprised that you had the courage to take the responsibility yourself.

Governor Tarkin: Princess Leia, before your execution, you will join me at a ceremony that will make this battle station operational. No star system will dare oppose the Emperor now.

Princess Leia: The more you tighten your grip, Tarkin, the more star systems will slip through your fingers.

If Muse’s Melbourne gig tomorrow night is as 33.3% as good as this 2004 Glastonbury outing, I’ll be one deliriously happy little vegemite. One more sleep!

The Return of Sprocket Man!

Hang on to your hats kids, reports are coming in that Sprocket Man has made a fleeing appearance in our national capital!

Mystery cyclist saves man’s life
A 70-year-old man who collapsed in the centre of Canberra wants to personally thank the anonymous good Samaritan who helped save his life. The passer-by, who was dressed in cycling attire and wearing a helmet, performed crucial CPR on Joe Massingham before an ambulance crew arrived.

Mr Massingham, a father-of-three, married his long term partner just weeks before his collapse in Civic on July 16. He thanked those who had helped him, including visiting Victorian firefighter Michael Briant and the anonymous cyclist. “I am very grateful for their help and would like to thank them from the bottom of my heart,” Mr Massingham said.

Biff! Pow! Splatt! Sock! Whamm! Take that and that, you nasty meedya stereotypes and caricatures!

“In particular I would really like to meet the person who performed CPR prior to the ACT Ambulance Intensive Care Paramedics (ICP’s) arrival because his actions potentially saved my life.” The ACT Ambulance Service said it wanted to publicly thank Mr Briant and the second man and present them with letters of commendation.

Clank! ooooff Whack! Crash! eee-yow Splatt! A big haymaker in the glass jaw to those petty News Limited hacks - people who decide to ride bicycles aren’t all rogue lycra-wearing scofflaws!

“Joe’s survival is testament to the benefits of life-saving CPR with advanced pre-hospital care.” said director of the ACT Ambulance Service David Dutton. “The ACT ambulance service would like to give special thanks to the people who had gathered to watch this real live drama unfold for their support, as the two good Samaritans and the ICP’s where applauded by the crowd as they left the scene.”

Huzzah for Sprocket Man! Ride forth with pride, Mystery Canberra Cyclist!

All Hail King O’Grady!

Australian Stuart O’Grady claimed the biggest win of his European racing career with a stunning victory in the legendary Paris-Roubaix one-day classic here today.

The 33-year-old CSC cyclist from Adelaide became the first Australian to win the race known as the “Hell of the North”, crossing the finish line in the Roubaix velodrome in just over six hours but nearly a minute ahead of Juan Antonio Flecha of Spain and former winner Steffen Wesemann of Switzerland.

O’Grady played his hand perfectly over the 259 kilometres, getting in with a group of 34 riders, including two of his CSC team-mates, that went on to build a maximum lead of nearly five minutes on the peloton.
