I want a New Toy, oh ay oh, nothing too demanding. Ta.
Beer Can Hill has a new resident - Kitten of Doom. Isn’t she fugging gorgeous! KoD is the ultimate set-and-forget commuter, practically the only thing I’ll have to do now is ride the ruddy thing to bed the disc brakes in. And then possibly adjust/replace the head stem. And then decide if 36T is fine … and then decide whether to replace it with 44T … and then have to frig around with the chain line … but like most projects it’s ongoing process of tweaking until optimum results and/or satisfaction is obtained.
The 15′ frame is a Felt MTB of indeterminate gender, the Kona Project 2 forks were pilfered from The Blokes Kona Unit nee Kona Travesty of transcontinental fame, with Alfine 8-speed hub, bomb proof cherry-red Velocity Deep V 32 hole wheel-set, Shimano cable disc brakes and obligatory SKS guards + Zefal toe-clips so I can wear any shoes I goddamn like. The frame was power-coated the same time as the roadie.
In all this project took about three years from first clapping eyes on the stripped frame at Abbotsford Cycles until and then slowly getting ones proverbial & components in a pile to build it up. Of which, most of the credit should go to The Bloke and the wonderful staff at Abbotsford Cycles. Top job Peter, well done.

AAAaaaah - sweet looking ride. Building up and 8 speed alfine myself for the long bike (xtracycle) project with discs….. Do you like the hub? That looks so horny. What bars are they? Nitto albatross? I sthe derailuer for tension or are you going to put a double on the front?

Those wheels would be drooled over here. London’s fixed gear community is lusting after builds using coloured DeepV’s.
You’ve done very well matching frame and rim colour. The tensioner looks more like a full derrailer - more details/closer photos perhaps?

Answering your questions folks:
Treads: Vittoria Randonneurs
Bars are gullwings although I’m about to switch to a pair of gentle MTB-style risers. Have gullwings on another bike, but with a more upright position. For commuting I don’t think the the downward/flared angle is going to work out.
The tensioner comes with the Alfine hub, unfortunately the existing dropouts don’t lend themselves to not running a tensioner. More plans: a visit to Gripsport for horizontal dropouts, but I have to seriously consider the costs versa running the setup as is. Front derailleur? No as I think it really defeats the reasoning behind wanting to run a hubgear in the first place.
Gears: may have to run the chain line slightly out of whack for a 44T. At the mo it’s a 36T with 20T on the hub, which even in my very unfit condition will seriously give me the irrits spinning out at low speeds. Or should I just practice my cadence, shed the lard then go to 44/18. Hey I’ve waited this long, I’m very patient!
Regarding the rims, Epx bikes do a nice deal on the Velocity stuff. As well as Rohloff speedhubs. Now envisage for a moment, those rims built up on this on a red On One frame. Phhooarrrr! Guess who’s got that!

I’m always espousing the virtues of spinning (though I didn’t even qualify for last night’s rollapaluza event.. hangs head in shame) but have you considered some other tricks to sort out your chainline issue?
Fitting the 44T on the inside of the crank spider rather than outside? Changing the bottom bracket to one with a shorter spindle (might have issues with crank meets chainstay though). What about spacing options on the rear hub? Space out the non-drive-side or perhaps your sprocket has one wider side so can be flipped over?

Hmmm, been thinking along the same track in regards to the chainline issues. But as I semi-designed this steed as a lard-removal device, maybe I should just learn to spin…
Absolutely love riding KoD, good news is the gullwings are going to stay. As for replacing the tensioner, well the discs are going to prove problematic. Fug it, she looks purdy enough as it is.
Don’t know of it helps with chainline, but more “gears” can be had without a messy front derailleur…….

ooooh… I heart the Alfine hub veddy veddy much. C’mon, whadthatsetyaback? Will it work without the tensioner? I have a bike in need of a lot of range in the gears but no slack in the chain.
